Twitter Stretches Its Wings: International Versions Take Flight

first_imgRelated Posts Twitter has announced it will soon grow from its current offering of English and Japanese only to include versions in French, Italian, German, and Spanish. However, as their translation team now comprises just five staffers, Twitter is asking users to suggest translations for the website. “We are inviting a small group of people to become volunteer translators at first,” wrote co-founder Biz Stone on the company blog. “As more folks volunteer, the translation suggestions should accumulate faster, and we’ll have enough material to respond.”Stone also noted that French, Italian, German, and Spanish, collectively called FIGS, are the starting point for the company’s planned expansion into many other languages. But will the startup be able to dominate internationally, given the substantial ecosystem of Twitter clones? We’ve long been interested in Yahoo! Meme, which built its user base by launching in Portuguese only, then expanding to Spanish and, more recently, English. Some of these sites are more obviously direct rip-offs of Twitter, such as the Spanish Birddi. In fact, the Twitter fan wiki lists 28 foreign-language Twitter clones and links to this exhaustive list of more than 200 microblogging sites around the world. Some of these sites have stronger, more established communities than others. Some of the URLs have been sold, and we’re sure that some will be shut down for obvious trademark infringement or other legal reasons as Twitter expands its reach globally. Still, a few will remain in each market as viable competitors (and possible acquisitions).Another thought we’ve had is that this will bring Twitter into the same arena as MySpace, Facebook and other larger properties in terms of having a large enough base of users to justify its valuation and ensure its continued success. Sure, Twitter is the tech scene’s darling, and MySpace is an ironic bit of ancient history to hardcore geeks. But MySpace still controls a large share of many international markets and, perhaps for that reason alone, still gets enough eyeballs to remain competitive.According to a Compete.com report earlier this year, Twitter saw around 6 million unique visitors in January of this year, making it the third largest social website on the Internet. MySpace had about ten times as many visitors. Facebook, which made translated versions of its site a priority some time ago, saw 68 million unique visitors. And if you’ve ever doubted whether Facebook and Twitter are competitors, take a look at this Inside Facebook report on that network’s international growth, which has surged to the point that Facebook’s international users make up a full 70% of the site’s users. Will those accustomed to using Facebook status updates as their microblogging platform of choice see the point of adopting Twitter? Is an international scope, starting with FIGS translations, going to take Twitter over the top and make it a major-league player in social networking worldwide? And how will it deal with robust microblogging competition in international markets? Let us know what you think in the comments. Windows Azure Drive: A Sign of Things to Come for Microsoft

first_imgIn the full spirit of cloud computing, Microsoft is making it a top priority to charge by the minute for applications that are ported to Windows Azure. This is the case in today’s beta release of Windows Azure Drive, which allows Windows users to run their applications in the cloud using the Windows NTFS APIs. The service is intended to make it simpler to migrate to the cloud.According to the Windows Azure Team blog, Azure stores the data in what Microsoft is calling “page blobs.”“For the beta release of Windows Azure drive, customers will be billed only for the storage space used by the Page Blob and the read/write transactions to the Page Blob. This will be incorporated into the standard Windows Azure usage rates and there will not be a separate line item on the bill.” Microsoft officially launched its Azure service on Monday. Beginning immediately, the company is charging for most of the services offered. As is standard with cloud computing, Microsoft is charging on a usage basis.Does the strategy make sense? We think so. The economy is not getting better any time soon. Resources are constrained for IT shops of any size. The pay-as-you-go model makes it a bit easier to manage infrastructure costs.According to Information Week, the pricing for Windows Azure Drive is as follows:“In the standard plan, a virtualized Windows Server ranges from 12 cents to 96 cents per hour, depending on CPU usage. Storage starts at 15 cents per GB per month, plus one cent for every 10,000 transactions. Microsoft’s SQL Server costs $9.99 per month for a 1 GB Web database.”The push to the cloud will continue unabated for Microsoft. Case in point is the deal with Hewlett-Packard, worth $250 million. The two companies are building a cloud infrastructure that spans hardware and software integration. Azure is Ray Ozzie’s baby. He believes in it. And it may just be the path that Microsoft needs to be relevant in a world dominated by cloud-based applications. How to Find Where You Used a Clip in Premiere Pro

first_imgHere’s the easiest way to find where you’ve used a clip in Premiere Pro CC 2015.Sometimes you need to be able to find a specific single clip in a large project or check that a clip has been replaced in every timeline you’re working in. Thankfully this is really easy to achieve in Premiere Pro. With this quick tip you’ll be able to find and jump to these specific places in no time at all.Why might you need to do this? You might need to do this when replacing temporary stock shots with the real, full-resolution footage or when you are replacing an old client logo with a new one. This is particularly useful when you have many sequences which all contain slight, but distinct, variations of the same edit. Maybe you need to find a specific shot in a timeline, but you can’t quite remember which one it’s in. So instead of rummaging around for ages, just do the following simple steps.Find Where a Clip is Used in Your Premiere Pro ProjectThere’s actually a couple of different ways to find where a specific clip has been used in Premiere Pro. We’ll go through both options, as they’re equally useful in different contexts. To find a clip when you know what the shot looks like from the camera original format of 00100.MTS, but you’re not sure of the clip name (like in the footage above that hasn’t been renamed), go to the bin where you think it might be and double click it to open it up into a new window.Turn on thumbnail view by pressing the icon highlighted above to view all your clips as video images and locate your clip.Click on the video or audio usage icons (depending on which element you’re looking for) to bring up a list of all the places where the clip has been used in your project. This shows the name of the timeline, followed by the clip name, followed by the timecode of every in point of that clip. So in the list above, you can see four instances of 00186.MTS in the ‘Cut Aways Grouped’ timeline.Click on an item in the list to open that timeline with the playhead at that specific timecode.Another Way To Find Clips in PremiereThere is another way to find where a clip has been used in your project and this method is much more useful when you know the name of the specific clip you are looking for. First of all, we’re going to right click (Ctrl+click on a Mac) on the properties bar at the top of the Project Panel to bring up the Metadata Display configuration window. This window allows you to select which metadata fields are displayed in the Project Panel in Premiere Pro CC 2015. We’re interested in the “turn on the Video Usage and Audio Usage columns.”In the Project Panel, scroll to the right to find the Video and Audio Usage metadata columns for the clip you are looking for.In this case, 00186.MTS. If you didn’t even know where the clip was to be found in the project’s bins and folders, you could simply type its name into the search box in the top left corner of the Project Panel.Next, click on the Video Usage disclosure triangle next to the number (which is telling you how many times the clip has been used across the project) to bring up the familiar list of places where the clip is to be found. In the image above you can see in the timeline where clip 00186.MTS has had a cut made in it which has produced the first three Cut Aways Grouped:00186.MTS In Points in the list, all with fairly close timecodes at 01:51:05, 01:51:08 and 01:51:12. So the list will show you every instance of an edit in that clip.Looking for a few more Premiere Pro tips? Nickelodeons Jennette McCurdy Wants Kids To Eat More Veggies

first_imgNinety percent of kids don’t eat the recommended amount of veggies each day and summer is an ideal time to try a new approach. Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy is on a mission to put the play back on the plate.Jennette McCurdy on the set of her Birds Eye veggies shoot showing kids how fun eating their veggies can beShe’s teamed up with Birds Eye Vegetables for a multi-week challenge for families to seize the fun and Rewrite the Dinnertime Rules leading up Nickelodeon’s 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play this fall.In addition to playing with their veggies and enjoying more relaxed family dinners, this summer kids and parents can also enter for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to join Jennette McCurdy at Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play flagship event. Through this campaign families have an opportunity to learn new ideas that could help shape a lifetime of healthy eating. Each week kids can follow along online at Nick.com/BirdsEye for veggie-themed games and exclusive behind-the-scenes videos with McCurdy. Parents should visit www.BirdsEye.com for easy advice on getting kids to eat their veggies, more dinner “rules” and recipe ideas created for and tested by kids. The sweepstakes deadline is August 26 at noon.“I’m excited that kids get to be in charge of the dinner rules this summer!” McCurdy says.” I’m passionate about kids eating their veggies and can’t wait to see the ideas from families out there.”Rewriting the Rules Inspiration
McCurdy and Birds Eye have the following suggestions for getting started Rewriting the Dinnertime Rules. These rules are only the beginning, McCurdy says. “Kids have endless imagination—veggie tacos, veggie faces, veggie ‘try’ outs and on and on. Rewriting the rules means letting them put the fun in the picture. I had so much fun filming as I played with my Birds Eye veggies, so I hope kids will watch my videos and they will provide inspiration!”Rule #1: Role Reversal. Kids pick the menu and the veggies, help shop for the groceries and are in charge (with a little help from mom and dad) in the kitchen. Plus, they get to pick the theme and dress and decorate accordingly, whether it’s hitting the “beach,” bringing out your family’s wild side in the “jungle” or cheering on your favorite sports team.Rule #2: Play with Your Birds Eye Veggies! You can use your veggies to make smiley faces or create colorful rainbows on your plate … you can even give your broccoli a mohawk haircut (really!) – just have fun!Rule #3: Celebrate Every Bite. It can take up to 12 times for a kid to try a new type of veggie, or any new food before he or she begins liking it. So, keep it up! And while you’re at it, give yourself a high five for every bite your kid takes.Rule #4: Be a Veggie Explorer. There are all sorts of cool and surprising ways to serve veggies. Like smoothies (mixed veggies with yogurt, OJ and honey), popsicles (carrots and OJ) and salad dressings (carrot ginger). You AND your kids will be amazed at all the cool ways you can eat your veggies. The Birds Eye and Nickelodeon partnership is in its second year. In 2012, the program drove a 20 percent increase in incremental volume for Birds Eye versus 2011. Not only did last year’s program drive brand sales and overall category growth, the effort helped in reversing a negative trend in the category and increased vegetable consumption in a fun, engaging way.The program also is part of Birds Eye’s commitment to the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA Honorary Chair First Lady Michelle Obama to end childhood obesity within a generation.First Lady Michelle Obama has lauded Birds Eye’s innovative approach to inspiring kids and helping support families in healthier eating.“This year’s program is about getting kids to try new vegetables by making dinner time fun for them. We know that when kids are involved in the dinner process, they are more likely to want to eat what they helped create,” said PHA Chief Marketing Officer Drew Nannis. “Birds Eye is showing not only that companies can be a positive, proactive part of making the healthy choice easier for kids, but also that they can be profitable while doing it.”Along with the consumer education programs and contests, this summer Birds Eye has launched an entire new product line called Recipe Ready that helps families save time with ingredient ready, fresh frozen vegetables assortments for the most popular meals we cook today. With more than 20 vegetable combinations for meals like fajitas, beef stew, pasta primavera, stir fry and grilling favorites, the Recipe Ready product line cuts down on the prep work of gathering and prepping the vegetables so instead of slicing and dicing the cook can focus on the rest and deliver weeknight meals more often.“When families eat dinner together more often, children receive many benefits including better eating habits,” Birds Eye Senior Vice President of Marketing Rodrigo Troni said.” We believe our product and programs are helping make a difference.”Consumers can enter the Rewrite the Dinnertime Rules sweepstakes, receive weekly ideas for increasing family fun with kid-friendly veggie-eating ideas and more at Birdseye.com or by following the brand page at Facebook.com/BirdseyeVegetables.Source:PR Newswirelast_img read more
